Medicine Hat Teepee
Saamis Teepee, commonly known as Medicine Hat Teepee, is easily the city's most visible and well-known landmark. Originally constructed for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, the teepee is in recognition of and in tribute to Canada's native heritage. Measuring in at 215 feet tall and 160 feet around, Saamis Teepee is hailed as the tallest in the world and is a stunning sight to observe. Built entirely of steel, the teepee is ringed with large circular story-boards representing aspects of native history and culture. A visit here is an excellent opportunity to pay respect while acquiring knowledge, appreciation, and understanding. Saamis Teepee was thoughtfully erected atop the scenic Seven Persons coulee and its Northern Plains archaeological site, the Saamis Archaeology Site. As a result of this, a visit to the teepee presents the opportunity for a wonderful and meaningful self-guided walking tour through the plains. Experts believe that over 83 million artifacts are buried at the site just below your feet!
